Ontario-Specific Regulatory Guide

Owning an Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) or snowmobile in Ontario comes with specific legal responsibilities. Here is what you need to know:

  • Registration & Plates: Most ORVs (ATVs, UTVs) and snowmobiles must be registered with Service Ontario. You will receive a green vehicle permit and a license plate (or decal for snowmobiles) that must be visible.
  • Mandatory Insurance: In Ontario, if you operate a motorized vehicle off your own private property, you must carry liability insurance.
  • Trail Permits:
  • Driver Requirements: You must be at least 12 years old to drive an ORV or snowmobile across a road or on a trail (with specific license requirements like a motorized snow vehicle operator’s license). For on-road access, a valid G2 or M2 driver’s license is typically required.
